Job Responsibilities:

You will help to track and manage the flow of news releases, feature stories, press kits, and related products,. As Copy Chief, you will copy edit and proofread, track metrics, write media products, and work with members of the media by setting up interviews with JPL subject matter experts and providing them with multimedia assets. We have a fast-paced environment where collaboration and strong communication skills are key. Being highly organized, collegial, and skilled at creating accurate, user-friendly products for general audiences and the news media alike while working with stakeholders at JPL, NASA, and other institutions is essential.

Job Requirements:

  • Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Science Writing or other related field with a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience.
  • Strong communication skills along with solid news judgment and a sense of diplomacy.
  • In-depth experience in either traditional or digital media.
  • Advanced skill in copy editing. This includes having a sharp eye for errors, a strong ear, great diplomatic skills, and a passion for making science and technical language clear without sacrificing pinpoint accuracy.
  • Advanced skill in managing newsroom traffic. This entails coordinating with stakeholders, tracking and updating various internal calendars, and maintaining open communication channels to meet deadlines while also keeping them realistic.
  • Excellent skills in one or more of the following areas: science and technical writing, news releases, digital storytelling, and both short- and long-form newswriting. Candidates must be able to distill complex science and engineering topics into brief, colorful, and descriptive materials that are easily understood by the public and the general media yet provide sufficient detail for science and technology journalists.
