Job Description:

The Experienced First Line Supervisor (EFLS) program is specifically designed to develop leaders that will drive the future of our organization. This training program is approximately 6 months in length and includes both classroom and on-the-job training. You will gain experience in our Track, Engineering Services, Structures, Signal, Mechanical, Transportation, and Environmental departments. Job Responsibilities:

  • Plan daily work to complete projects per work schedule.
  • Perform pre-job surveys and ensure quality control by walking, hi-rail and track inspections.
  • Provide project planning and scope development support.
  • Ensure track structure is maintained to meet BNSF and FRA standards.
  • Support cash flow forecast process with Finance Department.
  • These will include new main lines, sidings and extensions, yards, track reconfigurations, intermodal and auto facilities, access to customer facilities, and other railroad infrastructure.
  • Hours are irregular with a minimum of 40 hours per week
  • Evaluate and manage change orders associated with projects.
  • Work with NOC dispatchers and other operating personnel to ensure proper coordination of track windows in order to make production goals.
  • Work in and around bridges in elevated locations
  • Work both indoors and outdoors in extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet)
  • Provide surveying support, project administration, inspection and ensure conformance to BNSF’s standards and specifications.
  • Coordinate internal Signal, Track, Telecommunications and Structures design and construction activities to progress the overall project.
  • Provide review of proposed BNSF customer project concepts and plans.
  • Follow up on safety issues, maintain contact with field personnel and help enhance overall quality and safety guidelines.
  • Provide BNSF Economic Development and Marketing Departments with engineering guidance.
  • Coordinate track maintenance work with contractors and other departments to maximize work efforts and train operations.
  • Work around heavy and moving machinery
  • EFLS will attend an initial 2-week orientation conducted at our company headquarters in Fort Worth, TX where trainees will learn about the BNSF culture, network with leaders of the company and receive leadership training
  • The remaining time will be spent completing on-the-job field training conducted at assigned training location which will include instructor led and web-based training courses as well as numerous job shadows across multiple departments
  • Support securing construction and environmental permits.
  • Implement and manage construction safety processes.
  • Identify and coordinate property purchase and utility relocations with other BNSF departments and real estate service providers.
  • From Fort Worth, trainees will attend a 2-week technical and personnel training conducted at our Technical Training Center (TTC) in Overland Park, KS where trainees will learn about operations and field safety
  • The EFLS program is an intensive training program that lasts approximately 6 months
  • Work around electronics, including electric currents
  • Ensure compliance and application of company policies, i.e., BNSF’s Equal Employment Policy, applicable safety rules, union agreements, FRA standards and government regulations.
  • Provide project management support, including maintaining project managing systems.

Job Requirements:

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Five years of work or military experience supervising 15 or more employees in a fast-paced, outdoors, all types of weather conditions environment
  • At least Three (3) years of work experience supervising 5 or more employees in a fast-paced, outdoors, all weather conditions environment and/or a fast-paced electronic controls or signals environment.
  • Ability to relocate within the BNSF Railway operating system to start and/or upon career progression and/or business need
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Able to work “on-call” for emergency situations
  • Authorization to work in the US without Company sponsorship now AND in the future
  • At least 18 years of age or older.

Qualification & Experience:

  • Experience managing a unionized workforce
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Experience in a position with travel up to 100% as part of the job
  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline
